Key Factor
Resolution is one of the key factors in deciding plasma TV screen. There are two types of plasma TV screens- High definition TV (HDTV) and Enhanced definition TV (EDTV). The costs to the manufacturer for making the display element in plasma in case of HDTV plasma screens are much higher and hence HDTV is always costlier than EDTV. It is the input signal and the model quality of a plasma TV which determine the picture quality. A high resolution monitor does not necessarily ensure better picture than an EDTV resolution monitor. Some EDTV resolution plasma screens in fact exhibit better HDTV signal, the deciding factors being display quality and the internal processing circuitry of the plasma screen.
HDTV Vs EDTV Resolution
If the incoming signal is HDTV, better picture can be viewed from the HDTV unit. Plasma display of high resolution is comparatively better viewed on HDTV than EDTV. However EDTV plasma performance is better in case of video signals of lower end like satellite or cable TV and DVD. The reason is less conversion to perform by EDTV from input to display. Regardless of whether the plasma possesses an HDTV or EDTV resolution, best picture from any source can only be ensured by a branded and quality plasma display having a strong video processing.
Why Higher Resolution
A relevant question would be the reasons for making costly plasma displays with higher resolution. There is no doubt that quality enhances when the inputs are from HDTV sources. Apart from that, computer XGA signals of 1024x768, now the most popular display resolution in PC can be better displayed with a higher resolution. Since the improper scaling of image in case of low resolution can distort or make the image illegible, it is always advisable to go for high resolution for display of text or numeric data. The pixel resolution of a plasma screen determines which plasmas display high resolution.
